Hemophagocytosis

The Hemophagocytosis is in cell biology a special form of phagocytosis . The latter is a form of endocytosis and generally refers to the uptake of cells and other particles into the cytoplasm of other cells. The uptake of blood cells ( erythrocytes and leukocytes ) or their components is characteristic of hemophagocytosis in particular . These "incorporated" cells and cell components can be detected in histological preparations. The receiving cells are mostly cells called macrophages . Again, there are subgroups such as histiocytes . If erythrocytes in particular can be detected in the cytoplasm of the phagocytic cell, then this is also referred to as erythrophagocytosis .

Haemophagocytosis typically occurs on a larger scale in the presence of haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis , also known as macrophage activation syndrome . But hemophagocytosis can also be detectable after blood transfusions , in the context of autoimmune diseases or sepsis .
