Heresiology

As heresiology in is theology or religious studies the doctrine of heresy called. In heresiology, a church describes what it defines as heresy and how it recognizes heresy. A heresiology always represents the subjective standpoint of a particular church.

The history of heresiology describes how the churches have defined heresy at different times. This is usually accompanied by a description of orthodoxy as the opposite of heresy, so that the history of heresiology is closely related to the history of dogma .

Heresiology is to be distinguished from heresiography, a treatise that describes heresies. Many heresiographies, however, contain heresiological motives.
