The ASK 18 is the last composite aircraft from the aircraft manufacturer Schleicher . It is a club class glider and was positioned as the successor to the Ka 6E .

history

When the ASK 18 designed by Rudolf Kaiser appeared in 1974, the age of composite construction was already over. The fiber-composite Astir and Mistral , which appeared at the same time, were tough competitors, so that a total of only 48 copies of the ASK 18 were built, including an ASK 18B (as an export version for Finland) with a span reduced to 15 m.

construction

The ASK 18 received the 16 m extended surfaces of the Ka 6E and a fabric-covered hull in tubular steel construction, which is similar to the K-8 hull, but looks much flatter and more elegant and like the Ka 6E has one wheel in front of the center of gravity and none Skid required. The fixed main wheel can be braked and the nose of the fuselage is covered with a GRP shell. The horizontal stabilizer comes from the Ka 6E and is damped, the vertical stabilizer is based on the Ka 10 .

As with the Ka 6E, the wing profile is the FX 40 (inside) and FX 30 (outside). In the horizontal stabilizer it is a Joukowski 12% .

use

The cockpit is spacious and also very suitable for tall and strong pilots. With the very good-natured flight characteristics and performance - comparable to the Ka 6E - it is very pleasant to fly and therefore suitable for starting cross-country flights. Today the ASK 18 is used as a robust and easy-to-fly aircraft in clubs that are still training on ASK 13 . Well-preserved ASK 18s achieve comparatively high prices on the used market.
