The Schleicher ASW 28 is a single-seat glider of the FAI - standard class with a 15 m wingspan in fiber composite construction. Manufacturer of the ASW 28 is Alexander Schleicher GmbH & Co . As usual with Schleicher, its designer Gerhard Waibel added the first letter of his surname “W” to the type designation.
history
The ASW 28 is the successor to the less successful ASW 24 , which in turn followed the well-known ASW 19 . The ASW 28 is - like the competing models Rolladen Schneider LS8 and Schempp-Hirth Discus 2 - available as the ASW 28-18 for the increasingly popular 18 m class with 18 m span. In addition, the aircraft is offered as the ASW 28-18 E with an auxiliary engine as a homecoming aid.
As part of the development of the AS 33 , the ASW 28 also received some improvements, and production continues under the name ASW 28B. Among other things, the pilots of the ASW 28B now benefit from a larger cockpit, including more freedom of movement for the feet. Another of the many changes concerns the landing properties, as the current version uses three-tier airbrakes, which provide even better landing properties.

As the standard class aircraft, the aircraft is a fixed profile , winglets , retracting landing gear fitted and water ballast. A special feature of this aircraft are the different, sometimes mixed, fiber-plastic composites such as glass fiber , carbon fiber , polyethylene fiber and aramid fiber composites . This allows a low unladen weight and, thanks to the water ballast, high variability of the wing loading.
