Hardness liter

The hardness liter denotes the capacity of a system that uses ion exchange to soften or desalinate water . The amount of water with a certain hardness that can be treated is stated. A cation exchanger can only remove the cations. The alkaline earth metals, i.e. the total hardness components, are removed especially in a water softener . A combination of anion and cation exchange resin removes all ions (salts) from the water except for residues.

The hardness liter is the product of the hardness (in the case of softening) or the salt content (in the case of desalination) of the source water and the treatable volume. So the formula is:

HL = total hardness (salinity) [° dH] × water volume [liters]
