A height gauge is a scribing tool that is mainly used for scribing lines in metal workpiece surfaces. Height indicators consist of a heavy base on which a stand with a scale is attached vertically. The stand is enclosed by a vertically movable unit that works with vernier or digitally, and whose scriber can still be adjusted horizontally using two screws . With the scriber, straight lines that are parallel to the support surface of the base can be scratched into a workpiece.

The difference between a height indicator and a parallel indicator is that with the parallel indicator, the height is only set by eye or a separate ruler is required, while with the height indicator, the scale and vernier are already integrated and the height can be set precisely.
