Habitation Clément
The Habitation Clément distillery was founded in 1887 by the physician and politician Homère Clément. The various types of rum , also sold in the USA , soon received high praise worldwide. The estate is located in Martinique south of Le François , is surrounded by sugar cane plantations and is characterized by the 16 hectare landscaped park with over 300 tropical plants.
The manor house is on a small hill surrounded by old trees. The house is fully and originally furnished. The living rooms and the office are on the ground floor, the bedrooms are on the upper floor. Together with the outbuildings and the terraces, there is an ensemble that is worth seeing and provides an excellent impression of the Creole architecture and the former life of the landowners. The property was declared a Historic Monument in 1996. After the Second Gulf War , President George W. Bush Sr. met here . and President François Mitterrand to discuss the world political situation. In the former economic building there is a small exhibition about the meeting.
The sugar cane press, the steam engine and the distillation plant were decommissioned in 1988 and restored in 2005. However, the system is not functional and can only give a limited impression of the rum production. Today the sugar cane is pressed outside the property and further distilled into rum. The storage in oak barrels takes place on the estate. The warehouses can be visited. Rum is also bottled on the property, but is not open to the public.
In February 2017, one of the only 40 bottles in total was sold for the first time in 1966. With a price of 100,000 euros, it is considered the most expensive rum bottle ever sold in the world.
