Habsburg cannibalism

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term Habsburg cannibalism goes back to the former SPÖ MP Günther Nenning . With "monarch eater" is meant the excessive energy of the Social Democrats and Left in Austria of the First and Second Republic, which until 1918 was extremely friendly to the monarchy in matters of defense of the republic .

Today, in addition to the expropriation laws of 1919, the conflict over Otto Habsburg's entry into Austria in 1961 is viewed as the climax of Habsburg cannibalism . Today it seems a bit strange that the SPÖ also organized strikes against Habsburg from 1964 onwards. In 1964, 283,000 hours of strike were held against Otto Habsburg's re-entry, in 1965 as much as 3.3 million hours and in 1966 another 570,000 hours. For the protest march against the Habsburgs' first entry in the autumn of 1966 - the visit lasted only a few hours - the SPÖ works councils brought 101,439 workers onto the streets.

It was only when the socialist Federal Chancellor Bruno Kreisky demonstratively shook hands with the emperor's son Otto Habsburg on the 50th anniversary of the Paneuropean Union in Vienna in 1972 that the historical awareness slowly began to relax. The last flare-up of Habsburg cannibalism is the beating of parts of the SPÖ, especially the club chairman Josef Cap , against the admission of the Habsburgs to the candidacy for Austrian Federal President in 2010 and 2011. Even at the funeral of Otto Habsburg in July 2011 Cited as a motive for Habsburg cannibalism in some newspaper articles on voices in this regard.

Today it is often cited as an explanation that small, neutral Austria in the center of the Cold War wanted to avoid reactions from the Habsburg-fearful communist zone or the Soviet Union through unnecessary actions.
