Chopping blocks or split blocks and firewood

Chopping blocks (also called split blocks or chopping sticks in parts of southern Germany, mostly split stick in Switzerland), preferably made of oak or another hardwood, are used when splitting wood with an ax to produce firewood . The height is ideally chosen so that the top edge of the piece of wood to be split is at hip height. In most cases such a chopping block consists simply of a piece of a tree trunk, rarely so much material is cut out in the lower part that only three legs remain. Such a chopping block is less stable, but lighter and more stable than a solid one.

Chopping blocks or chopping blocks for the butcher shop are made from assembled, vertical blocks of hardwood or end grain and are about the height of a worktop. Other variants are board-like (chopping board), are placed on the work surface and are also suitable for vegetables and herbs. They are used as a base when cutting meat . The surface must be sanded down regularly or cleaned with a wire brush.
