The Haesindang Park , ( 해신 당 공원 ) even penis park called, is a park in the city Sinnam in the province of Gangwon-do , near the east coast of South Korea . The park is known for its numerous penis statues created by various South Korean artists.

The Village Folk Museum , located in the park, has a wide variety of objects relating to sexual iconography from a wide variety of cultures, as well as tools for shamanic rituals and the history of the Korean fishing society.

Legend of Haesindang

The statues in the park are reminiscent of the tragic "Legend of Auebawi and Haesindang". According to this legend, a man left his wife on a rock in the sea while the latter was working. Due to a storm, he was unable to save his wife and she drowned. This meant that the residents of the adjacent village no longer caught fish. Some people say this happened because of the drowned woman. One day a fisherman relieved himself at sea and caught fish. According to legend, the spirit of the drowned virgin enjoyed the sight of the male member. To calm the woman's soul, the villagers made wooden carvings of penises and held religious ceremonies. Gradually the fish returned to the place and the residents of the village were able to lead a comfortable life again. The rock on which the woman died was called the Aebawi rock; the building where the religious ceremonies are held twice a year is called Haesindang .

Exhibits

On the seaside side of the park is a small shrine built in honor of the spirit of the woman. A bronze statue commemorates the legend. In Haesindang Park there are over 50 penis statues of all shapes and sizes: some have faces, appear more animated and are colorful, other statues are realistically modeled on the male member. Close to the cliff are life-size penis statues in which the Chinese zodiac signs were carved. Some statues serve as benches or drums. Even a movable cannon was built. These pieces were created as part of an exhibition at the Penis Culture Festival in Samcheok . There is a lighthouse in the shape of a phallus on the dock . The park also houses the largest aquarium theater in the country and an arboretum .
