The port company Helgoland (HGH) was founded in order to create the port-side infrastructure for the construction and maintenance of offshore wind farms on Helgoland . In addition, it makes sense to build transformer stations and distribution stations here for further power distribution, as the island offers better conditions for this compared to artificial structures in the North Sea. The founders of the HGH are the district of Pinneberg and the municipality of Helgoland, the municipality of Helgoland is the majority shareholder with around 75 percent of the shares.

Helgoland has around 1300 inhabitants, is part of the German economic area, but is neither part of the customs territory of the European Union nor the German tax area.
