The Landau Hafermagazin is a listed building at Weißquartierstrasse 23 / Reduitstrasse 6 in Landau in the Palatinate .

history

The oat magazine Landau was built between 1914 and 1916 on behalf of the Bavarian military administration as a feed store . The Karlsruhe construction company Dyckerhoff & Widmann was responsible for planning and executing the construction. The reinforced concrete construction in the Hennebique system was used. The result was a seven-storey building with a tapering upwards but otherwise regular frame made entirely of reinforced concrete, as well as the roof structure and roof cladding. This was a very innovative construction method at the time. The top floor was expanded in stages so that a concrete basilica was created. In the spaces between the rough concrete grid were plastered brick infills with iron windows.

At the end of the First World War in 1918, the oat magazine became the property of the French troops, who used it until it was withdrawn in 1930. From 1945 to 1999 it was again in the possession of the French army. During this time, the premises were operated as a commission laundry. After that it stood empty for years.

The future of this property remained unclear for a long time. Initially, a branch of the Sparkasse SÜW was planned, but it was then built at a different location. Various conversion concepts compatible with historic monuments have been developed through university projects, including for conversion to a parking garage, hotel or archive. Finally, the Baden-Baden investor Birk bought the building in 2007. In the same year, the Karlsruhe architecture office Archidee under Stefan Emslander started the conversion into a residential complex with 71 loft apartments . The developer was the Rastatt company Weisenburger. A four-storey brick building with a mansard roof was built on an area of 10,314 square meters ( GFA ). The historic reinforced concrete framework was retained during the renovation, as was part of the north facade and the basilica roof space.
