The Haggen Castle

The Haggenschlössli is a manor house built between 1642 and 1644 at the time of the early Baroque in the Haggen district of the city of St. Gallen at Haggenstrasse 94. It is popularly known as "Schlössli" due to its castle-like appearance and is the namesake of the Schlössli district to the east .

history

A building inscription on the large, south-west facing gable facade indicates that Johannes Boppart, captain in the Spanish service and son of Ulrich Boppart, had the house built from scratch in 1644 at a considerable financial expense: “ With gotes hilff and grace in advance diß hauß have erbuwet from the ground up, with great value vnd human art, but who god gives it for free. Johanes paper. Anno 1644 ". On the south front of the building you can find the year 1642 above an arched cellar door, which presumably marks the start of construction, while the inscription on the gable facade indicates the completion. At the same time, the St. Wolfgang chapel belonging to the property was rebuilt.

Haggengüter is documented as early as the second half of the 15th century. The related families Hux and Von Gaissberg appear as landowners. The Haggenhof later became the property of Ulrich Frank, a resident of St. Gallen. In 1572 the Straubenzeller Hans Heim and shortly afterwards Ulrich Boppart became the new owner. Presumably Johannes Boppart had the former Haggenhof demolished and the new "Schlössli" built in the same place.

In 1918 the property became the property of the city of St. Gallen. It was renovated in 1935, 1973/74 and last in 2008. In 1974 it was placed under federal protection. The Haggenschlössli is run as an economy today and is a popular destination. Wedding parties like to use it, especially because of the picturesque St. Wolfgang Chapel on a hill next to it.
