Building history

The contract for the construction of a memorial complex was placed in 2012. The Turkish company Polimeks , which is involved in numerous projects in Turkmenistan, was responsible for the construction . On October 6, 2014, the complex was opened at a major event. In the presence of great national celebrities, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov laid wreaths and then visited the adjacent museum. Since its completion, the square has been regularly used for laying wreaths with foreign state guests, for example in December 2015 with the Belarusian President Lukashenko .

Monuments

The memorial complex commemorates three of the most formative and significant events in the history of Turkmenistan in the form of large monuments: the Geok Tepes siege , the Second World War and the Ashgabat earthquake in 1948 .

Ruhy Tagzym Monument

This memorial commemorates the victims of the earthquake in 1948. A bronze bull with the globe on its horns stands on a marble base. Cracks appear on the globe and some corpses can be seen. A mother holds her young child up in both arms, apparently to protect them from the devastating effects of the quake. The monument is a central place for the residents of Ashgabat to commemorate the earthquake in which more than 100,000 people died and the entire city was destroyed. On the day of commemoration for the victims of the earthquake, the Turkmen President also laid a wreath of flowers on the monument.

Baky şöhrat Monument

A memorial to the fallen soldiers in World War II and the victory over fascism . The five steles that make up the memorial represent flames, responsible for the memorial's name, Eternal Flame . A similarly structured memorial was erected as early as 1970, and this was modified for the new Halk Hakydasy memorial complex.

Monument Milletiň ogullary

The third monument in the square shows a mother with her son. It is intended to remember all those who gave their lives for Turkmenistan. In particular, those who died defending Geok Tepe against the Russians in 1880 are remembered.

museum

The events that the memorials commemorate are taken up in the adjacent museum. There are exhibitions on the Second World War and the earthquake of 1948. Among other things, photos of Ashgabat before 1948 and after 1948 are shown and the visitor is informed about the years of clearing up and reconstruction measures in the Turkmen capital.
