Archipelago Halliluoto
Wreck of the MS Coolaroo

Halliluoto ( Swedish : Gråsälsbådan ) is an archipelago belonging to Finland in the Baltic Sea south of Helsinki .

The archipelago belongs to the Aluemeri sub-area of the Ulkosaaret district of the Finnish capital Helsinki. Immediately east of Halliluoto, the sea route runs to the port of Helsinki in the Gulf of Finland, about 13 kilometers to the north .

The uninhabited island stretches from northwest to southeast over about 200 meters with a width of up to 60 meters and rises only a little above the water surface. The rocky island is largely without vegetation and built on with a beacon and a bunker.

There were several ship accidents on the island. In October 1882, the SS Porthan ran aground in thick fog near Halliluoto. At the time of the accident, there were no passengers on board. The 17 crew members were saved. During a snow storm at Christmas 1931, the SS Orion of the Finnish shipping company Effoa had an accident . The people were rescued by the Aura patrol boat or were able to save themselves using the lifeboat.

On October 27, 1961, the Swedish freighter MS Coolaroo ran aground near Halliluoto. About 20 people were rescued after a short time. The crew and the captain were evacuated a few days later. Efforts to salvage the ship failed. In a storm in December 1961, the ship broke in two and sank. Parts were salvaged as scrap. The remaining parts of the wreck lie on the seabed near the island.
