Hamish Campbell

Hamish John Campbell (born April 29, 1953 Christchurch ) is a New Zealand geologist and paleontologist.

His father, John Douglas Campbell, was a lecturer in geology at the University of Otago in Dunedin. Hamish Campbell also studied geology there with a bachelor's degree in 1975. He received his master's degree from the University of Auckland in 1978 and received his doctorate in 1985 from the University of Cambridge .

Since 1978 he has been a geologist at the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Science (GNS) in Lower Hutt , New Zealand.

Campbell wrote a popular science book on the geology of New Zealand and made appearances on television as a scientist, for example as one of the presenters in the Coast New Zealand series . He has also curated exhibitions at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and works as a geologist for Te Papa.

In 2008 he received a lot of attention and skepticism with the claim that New Zealand (like most of Zeelandia today) was completely covered by the sea 23 million years ago (published, among other things, in his book In search of ancient New Zealand from 2007).

He is a member of the Royal Society of New Zealand and has been a companion since 2007.

He was married twice, his first marriage to Helen Anderson, chief scientist of the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology. They divorced in 1996 and remarried in 1998. From his two marriages he has two children each.

From 2004 to 2006 he was President of the New Zealand Association of Scientists. 1987/88 he was secretary of the Geological Society of New Zealand.
