Hanan Shield
The Hanan Shield is a prestigious trophy in the New Zealand rugby union . It was held for the first time in 1946 . The Hanan Shield is based on a challenge system like the Ranfurly Shield and is played between the provinces of North Otago , South Canterbury and Mid Canterbury . The province holding the title must defend the shield in challenge games, and if a challenger defeats it, that challenger becomes the new defender of the shield.
The 2009 Hanan Shield holder was Mid Canterbury , who defeated North Otago on October 6, 2007 by 25-22. The team won the Shield for the first time since 1998 in a violent clash in front of a record number of spectators at Oamaru's Centennial Arena. The game was widely regarded as one of the most memorable two-team clashes in New Zealand rugby history.
