The Hand Arrow Type 91 is a MANPADS of the Japanese Self Defense Forces . The system is similar to the American FIM-92 Stinger .
history
The Technical Research and Development Institute (TRDI) began developing an advanced infrared viewfinder in 1979 after Toshiba and Kawasaki submitted their project proposals. Toshiba was ultimately asked to develop it. In 1982, the Japanese military sought a replacement for the FIM-92 stinger system, which was then obtained from the United States. The system was developed under the name Keiko and SAM-X until 1987. Production then started in 1991, the guided weapon was called Kin-SAM Type 1 and was first delivered in 1994. An improved guided missile was issued in 2007, it is called Kai-SAM Type 91 .
technology
The guided weapon is very similar to the Stinger and also has two rocket motors, the first for ejection from the starter and the second for flight to the target. The cooled seeker head uses both infrared and visible light to find the target. The wavelengths of 0.4–0.7 µm and 3.5–5.2 µm are used for this. Intelligent image processing identifies the target and can therefore ignore countermeasures . The starter has a device for friend-foe recognition .
The improved Kai Type 91 guided missiles have been in production since 2007 and have a low-smoke rocket motor and a modified viewfinder that enables faster target acquisition and is better used at night.
The guided missiles are also used on the Kawasaki OH-1 and Closed Arrow Type 93 systems.
