Hand in hand (fair trade)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hand in Hand is a program in the early 1990s by the food manufacturer health food Rapunzel has been established to the fair trade and organic agriculture in the so-called developing countries to promote. The seal is also an organic seal , as the manufacturer only deals in organic products. It is also known as a sustainability label. A total of around 100 products bear the “Hand in Hand” seal. The product groups include spreads, nuts, chocolate, coffee and snacks.

criteria

The criteria were developed in cooperation with suppliers, inspectors and independent experts. The criteria are based on the core labor standards of the International Labor Organization , the definitions and requirements from the international standards of the SA 8000 (Social Accountability) and the guidelines for social justice of the IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements).

The dealer guarantees the suppliers direct and long-term supply relationships, purchase guarantees , fair prices and a bonus to promote eco-social projects. The seal should guarantee the consumers that the products contain at least 50% raw materials from the certified partners.

The suppliers guarantee products in organic quality, compliance with all national legal regulations in the field of social, environmental and labor law, social security for employees, healthy and safe working conditions, the prohibition of child labor and forced labor, and complete transparency.

Through the program, Rapunzel is both the author and direct importer of the raw materials and the distributor of the products. The private program stands alongside the fair trade programs of other organizations and various organic certifiers.

Suppliers

Compliance with the criteria is checked every two years by independent inspectors on site at all suppliers. The criteria apply to cooperatives, plantations, exporters and processors (including Rapunzel) from whom "hand in hand" products can come. The certification is carried out by an external certification body after all criteria have been met. Rapunzel Naturkost bears the external costs for the inspection and certification of the suppliers.

In 2012 Rapunzel worked with 15 “hand in hand” partners. Today there are 18 regional organizations from Egypt, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, the Dominican Republic, Ghana, India, Paraguay, Peru, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

Hand in hand funds

Every year Rapunzel pays one percent of the purchase value of the “Hand in Hand” raw materials into a fund that has been managed by Deutsche Umwelthilfe and Rapunzel since 1997 and promotes charitable eco-social projects in Asia, Latin America and Africa. Since it was founded in 1998, around 1.2 million euros have flowed into 260 projects in more than 50 countries. The annual funding amount is now over 100,000 euros (as of June 2017).
