Handbooks of music theory

Handbooks of Music Education is a German-language music pedagogical compilation which was intended "at the suggestion of the Music Pedagogical Association for use in music teacher seminars and for private lessons" and was published by Xaver Scharwenka (1850-1924) in Berlin (see also Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory ). Leading experts of the time contributed to it. It was published by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig. The series appeared since 1907 and continued after World War I until the late 1930s. The series includes some standard works in music education, some of which have been published in larger editions, for example by Xaver Scharwenka (methodology of piano playing), Hugo Riemann (small handbook of music history), Hugo Leichtentritt (musical theory of forms), Kurt Thomas (textbook for choral conducting ).

In his introductory note to the handbooks of music theory (Berlin, September 1907), Xaver Scharwenka wrote (beginning):

“The suggestion for the creation of the present compilation came from the lap of the Music Pedagogical Association, whose goal it is to strengthen and lift the music teaching position both internally and externally. As is well known, the first step towards this goal was the introduction of exams for music teacher candidates and the definition of the requirements to be placed on the candidates. The latter is, as far as possible, done in the examination regulations. However, since aspirants for the music teaching profession seek to acquire the necessary knowledge in a wide variety of educational establishments and in many cases with private teachers, the natural consequence arose of the desire to provide a set of guidelines for acquiring the required knowledge and skills give. There are now more than enough of all kinds of musical textbooks, and some of them can certainly be considered with great benefit in preparation for the music teacher examination. But these textbooks are very dissimilar, one is too broad for this particular pedagogical purpose, while the other may remain too sketchy, and another too strongly advocates the one-sided personal point of view of its author. In short, there is a lack of a complete collection of such guidelines, which, drawn up from the same pedagogical point of view, offer the teacher a suitable selection of material and serve the pupil as a supplement to oral lessons, but if necessary also as a means for self-teaching. [...] "
