Hannes Coetzee [ kuˈt͜sɪə ] (* 1944 ) is a South African slide guitarist from the Karoo region in South Africa.

Life

Coetzee became known beyond the region due to his special playing technique, the “Optel and Knyp”, in which the guitarist “grabs” the melody part with a spoon, held in his mouth, while the chord or bass part is gripped by hand . This playing style was first presented internationally in David Kramer's documentary Karoo Kitaar Blues (2003), excerpts of which were posted on YouTube . In 2007 he toured the United States for the first time.
