Hans Hamm (cherry)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Hamm , also Hamm Blanke , Hans Hamm Blanke , Späte Blanke or Bittere Blanke is a black variety of sweet cherries belonging to the cartilage cherries . Because of its aroma, it is also known as the Amarena cherry from the Lower Elbe.

origin

Hans Hamm is a historic variety from the Altes Land , where it has been grown for centuries. Like many ancient species, it is now threatened with extinction . The pomologist Eckart Brandt has leased one of the last old trees of the species and is trying to preserve the species.

fruit

The fruit is small. The firm skin is night black when fully ripe. The firm, strongly colored flesh is black and distinctly bitter, almost inedible when raw. However, when heated, it reveals its true aroma, after which it has a strong cherry taste with a very nice bitter almond aroma. It ripens in the sixth cherry week . It used to be considered the most suitable variety for making traditional cold cherry soup in the Altes Land.
