Hansatsu from 1730 on 1 Monme silver

The Hansatsu ( Japanese 藩 札 , dt. "Notes of the Han ") were a Japanese form of paper money during the Edo period . The Tokugawa shogunate had a monopoly on the minting of coins , so the daimyo , and later cities, temples and nobles at the imperial court in Kyoto, managed to issue bills. The notes mostly had an equivalent in gold, silver or copper coins, but there were also changes to rice, sake or oil.
