Hapkidowon ( kor. 합기도 원 ) was founded by Grandmaster Myung Hong-sik in 1981 in the state of Michigan in the USA. Hapkidowon is also known as the Mecca of Hapkido or as World Hapkido Headquarters ( 세계 합기도 본부 ; World Hapkido Main Center ). Hapkidowon is the center of Hapkido teacher training, the office of official Poom / Dan (black belt) approvals, it also offers seminars, leads the Hapkido organization and gives recommendations for directors of martial arts schools. Hapkidowon focuses on the unity and interests of Hapkido martial artists. Hapkidowon gives honors to those who contribute to the improvement of martial arts, the association of Hapkidowon.

historical overview

Grandmaster Myung Hong-sik started Hapkido at WonHyo Dojang in 1960. He participated in Seoul in 1968 at the "first Korean National Hapkido Demonstration ”. In 1970 he became chief trainer and teacher at Korea Hapkido YonMuKwan and the SangDo Dojang . In 1973 he became chief trainer and head of the main center of the Korea Hapkido YonMuKwan ( 대한 합기도 연 무관 ) and also took over the management of the Korea Hapkido Association from the YonMuKwan from the founder GM Myung Hong-sik. GM Myung moved to the United States in 1981 and opened Hapkido schools in Detroit and Michigan. In 1981 he founded the World Hapkido Headquarters (World Hapkido Main Center) - called Hapkidowon for short. In 2004 the main center was relocated to Corona , California.

Overview

Hapkidowon is a place of training for the dynamic art of Hapkido in its authentic form . Its high quality techniques are very practical and based on scientific principles. Offensive and defensive skills are taught in various real-world applications in the following scenarios: empty hand versus empty hand ( 맨손 对 맨손 ), hand versus weapon or weapon versus hand ( 맨손 对 무기 ) and weapon versus weapon ( 무기 对 무기 ). Hand-foot techniques, lever techniques, punch techniques, throwing and holding techniques as well as nerve pressure point techniques. Weapon techniques include the knife, stick, rope, dan bong, jung bong, jang bong, so bong and sword.

Meaning of the hapkidowon

  • Hap ( ; ) means "harmony", "coordinated" or "connecting", combining, connecting, joining together
  • Ki ( ; ) describes internal energy, spirit, strength or power, strength, energy, vitality, strength, power, spirits, endurance, potency
  • Do ( ; ) means "way" or "art", which is a literal translation of "connecting-energy-way"
  • Won ( ; ) means: house of learning, foundation, academy.
  • Hapkidowon means house of learning Hapkido. It is the International Hapkido Organization, also known as the World Hapkido Headquarters, and the homeland is authentically called Hapkido.
