The Harald Tower ( Norwegian : Haraldstårnet ) was a tower in the Norwegian city of Stavanger . It commemorated the Battle of Hafrsfjord in 872, as a result of which Harald Fairhair became Norway's first king and was a memorial to the national unification of Norway that followed. 16 memorial stones from the tower are still preserved today.

location

The tower was located west of Stavanger on the hill Ullandhaug in the district Sørmarka belonging to the same district Ullandhaug , such as at the site of today's broadcast tower Ullandhaug . The memorial stones that have been preserved are located to the west at the foot of the transmission tower.

history

The Harald Tower was built in 1895, according to other information in 1896, by the Stavanger Tourist Association on the then largely treeless Ullandhaug. The appearance of the tower was rather squat and, with the flat parts of the building surrounding the tower, reminded of a fortress. The design of the tower was based on the age of the Vikings . The memorial stones that are still preserved today were on the roof of the building. The interior of the complex was occupied by a long hall decorated with large paintings and runic inscriptions depicting the battle of the Hafrsfjord. A café was housed in the hall for years, but the number of visitors was only moderate.

During the Second World War , German troops installed an anti-aircraft battery on the hill . The remains of the tower were destroyed. The 16 memorial stones made of marble and provided with inscriptions were preserved and were later repositioned on the hill in the form of two circles.

The inscription on one of the stones, named Stafangr, indicates the origin of the city's name for Stavanger.
