The Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI) is a leading research institution in India in the field of mathematics and theoretical physics , based in Prayagraj , Uttar Pradesh .
The institute is autonomous and was founded in 1966 by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) of the Indian government. Originally affiliated to the BS Mehta Trust in Calcutta , it operated as the Mehta Research Institute (MRI) until October 2001 .
The HRI has been named after the mathematician Harish-Chandra since 2001 .
