The Harrenstein deformity is an asymmetry of the thorax . The sternum is twisted in the longitudinal axis. The ribs arise on one side so that they protrude above the level of the sternum - like a funnel chest . On the opposite side they appear lowered like a keel chest . As a rule, this does not result in a functional deficit and therefore no need for an operative correction.
