Hartwell Railroad

The Hartwell Railroad (HRT) is an American Short Line -Eisenbahngesellschaft in Georgia . The company is based in Hartwell .

The company operates a 93-kilometer route network from Elberton to Toccoa with a branch to Hartwell.

The company was founded in 1878 to build a line from Hartwell to Bowersville . After a bankruptcy and reorganization, the company came under the control of the Southern Railway from 1902 . In 1905 the previously narrow-gauge line was converted to standard gauge. In 1924 the Hartwell Railroad was sold to local buyers. 1990 Benny Ray Anderson took over the shares in the company. In 1994, the route between Elberton and Toccoa was acquired by Norfolk Southern .

Operation on the route is ensured by the Great Walton Railroad . Six EMD vehicles are available on locomotives for this purpose .
