Harvey Balls are circular ideograms that are used to visualize qualitative data. They are used in comparison tables to show the extent to which an examination object corresponds to defined comparison criteria.

Application example

When comparing products, information such as price or weight can be displayed numerically, information such as the presence or absence of certain features can be shown with a tick. Information like "security" or "usability" is more difficult to present at a glance. Harvey balls are often used for this.

They are also used for qualitative comparisons in project management in order to mark the degree of goal achievement.

The invention goes back to Harvey Poppel, who introduced it in the 1970s as an employee of the management consultancy Booz Allen Hamilton . For this reason, Harvey Balls are sometimes referred to as "Booz Balls".

Harvey Balls have nothing to do with Harvey Ball , the inventor of the smiley face .
