The Ruta del Che ( Route of Che ) is the route taken by the Cuban guerrilla leader Che Guevara and his group ELN during his last two years in 1966 and 1967 in Bolivia . Today the route is a popular tourist pilgrimage route.

Location and course

It is located in the region of the Río Ñancahuazú , a direct tributary of the Río Grande in southeastern Bolivia, where the foothills of the Andes mountain range merge into the plains of the Gran Chaco . The region is only sparsely populated with rural communities of the indigenous Guaraní people and lies at the intersection of three provinces: the province of Florida in the north, the province of Vallegrande in the southwest and the province of Cordillera in the southeast.

The endpoints of the route are the village of La Higuera , where Che was shot on October 9, 1967, and the town of Vallegrande , where Che Guevara's body was secretly buried.
