Main tree species

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The common beech is the main tree species in Central Europe.

The term main tree species (also known as main wood species or main economic tree species) is used in both vegetation and forestry . In general, it denotes the dominant tree species in the upper stratum of the various forest communities or forest stands .

From a forestry point of view, the predominant tree species or the most common tree species in a stand is the main tree species. This usually determines the operational objective. The growth behavior of the main tree species is decisive for determining the rotation time of mixed stands in forestry. In forestry , the common spruce , Scots pine , silver fir , red beech , English oak , sessile oak , sycamore maple and ash are the main tree species.

The definition of the main tree species (referred to as the main wood species in the law) also plays a role in the replacement of damage caused by game . According to Section 32 (2) of the Federal Hunting Act , damage caused by game in the absence of protective devices is only replaced on the main tree species occurring in the area. There is no binding definition here and the main tree species recognized must be named on a case-by-case basis. The frequency of occurrence of a tree species or its regeneration potential can serve as important criteria here.
