Ibbenbueren main cemetery
The Ibbenbüren main cemetery is one of the two large cemeteries in the Ibbenbüren district . The cemetery is in the east of Ibbenbüren city center on Ledder Straße and Dörnebrink. With its 7.7 hectares, it is the largest cemetery in Ibbenbüren in terms of area.
history
Due to the shortage of graves in the 1970s, the decision was made to build a new main cemetery in the east of the city. The cemetery was established in 1975/76 and had to be expanded as early as 1978/79. The suitability of the soil for burial purposes was stated in an expert report by the State Geological Office of North Rhine-Westphalia. The approval for the construction of the cemetery with an originally planned total size of 11.5 hectares was granted by the senior district director of the then Tecklenburg district on May 31, 1974. "Since the current central cemetery in the Nordstrasse / Bockradener Strasse area and the Laggenbeck Catholic cemetery only have a small capacity and there are no expansion options, there is a new main cemetery for the city center on the site suitable for burials northeast of Wickingweg / Ledder Strasse in accordance with the cemetery master plan with the eastern city area. "
In recent years, the number of burials in the main cemetery has decreased. The reason for this is a changed cemetery master plan and an increased demand for graves in the central cemetery . In 1994 a Muslim burial ground was created in coordination with the Islamic community. The application at that time was made by the Turkish-Islamic cultural association.
Burial facilities
The main cemetery offers a variety of burial options. In addition to the usual row, children's and elective graves as earth graves or urn graves, there are other alternatives. In addition to the Muslim graves, there have also been anonymous and maintenance-free earth and urn graves for some years. In the case of maintenance-free graves, the grave site is only provided with a name plate. However, planting the graves and placing vases and candles on these graves is not permitted. Furthermore, the ashes can be buried anonymously on an ash litter field. Another special feature is a grave site for stillbirths.
