Main pole

The main magnetic field in direct current machines is generated by the main pole windings supplied with direct voltage , which are connected in series on the main poles, or by permanent magnets located on the main pole of the stator. The magnetic flux (Φ) caused by the main pole winding penetrates the air gap and the armature of a DC machine. Since the main poles are not exposed to an alternating field and the associated eddy currents, they are made of cast or rolled steel.

The term main pole winding is used in the field of DC machines. In the case of three-phase and alternating current machines, one speaks of the field winding , but this term is also common in connection with direct current machines.
