location

The property is located on the “Am Sommerberg” street between the Rösrath districts of Forsbach and Hoffnungsthal . A bus stop of the same name is located at the entrance to the approximately 40-acre site.

prehistory

The Cologne convalescent home “Wilhelm Auguste Viktoria” was inaugurated on July 31, 1909 on the Sommerberg near Hope Valley. The house was named after Princess Auguste Viktoria of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg , the wife of Kaiser Wilhelm II. A generous donation from the imperial family on the occasion of the silver wedding of the imperial couple made the construction possible in 1906. 273,000 marks were donated. The client was the Patriotic Women's Association (Cologne department). The construction cost 280,000 marks. In times of war the house was used as a hospital. After World War II, it was known as a lung sanctuary.

Establishment of the workers welfare organization (AWO)

In 1962 the Federal Association of Workers' Welfare took over the property. Initially founded as a “home for neurotic-disocial male adolescents”, it developed over time into an institution for children, adolescents, families and integration assistance. In 2004 a separate operating company was created for the house. “Der Sommerberg AWO Betriebsgesellschaft mbH” is the name of the organization that has been running the business ever since. The changed wage structures of the employees due to the outsourcing led to multiple protests on the site. In 2012 a new intensive educational offer for girls was set up on the site. The offer is aimed at girls from the age of 12 who are subject to the highest levels of stress and danger and who are therefore unable to live at home. You are looked after by educational specialists around the clock in protected rooms. The range of offers on the Sommerberg is in the area of education and integration assistance. The catchment area of the organization now extends from the district of Düren, through the Rhein-Sieg, Rhein-Berg and Oberbergischen districts, with the main focus on the cities of Cologne and Bonn.
