Room in the house of Cupid and Psyche

House of Cupid and Psyche (also House of Cupid and Psyche; Italian Domus di Amore e Psiche ) is the modern name of a rich 4th century house in Ostia (I, XIV, 5). It was excavated in 1938.

The elegant house was built into an old, ruined apartment building. The new house had a central aisle that divided it into two parts. On the east side there was a small garden with a nymphaeum . The garden was bordered by Corinthian columns. On the other side there were four rooms, a toilet and a staircase to an upper floor.

The walls of the house were covered with rich marble ( opus sectile ). The same goes for the floors. The group of Cupid and Psyche that gave the house its name was in one room . The house is good evidence of the rich use of marble in houses of this time, whereas wall paintings hardly played a role.
