Hawkhead Hospital
The Hawkhead Hospital was a hospital for infectious diseases in the Scottish town of Paisley in the Council Area Renfrewshire . Various buildings in the complex are now listed. Buildings 7 and 8 have been listed in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A since 1991 . Buildings 1–5, however, together with other structures, have been a category B monument ensemble since 1985.
history
In 1932 the City of Paisley acquired the Hawkhead land to build the hospital. The construction contract was awarded the following year to the architecture firm John Burnet, Tait & Lorne , whose design for the Royal Masonic Hospital in London received international recognition. Thomas Smith Tait was in charge of the planning . He designed a new concept with isolated treatment units, which made it possible to treat various diseases within one building. The entire facility provided space for 181 patients and employees and was opened on July 7, 1936.
Since 1986 Buildings 7 and 8 have been listed on the Scotland List of Listed Buildings at Risk. At that point they were empty and not cared for while other parts of the hospital were still practicing. An application for a demolition permit from 1992 was withdrawn after an objection by the monument protection authorities. The responsible health authorities initially planned a conversion of the building, but previously closed the entire facility, which was offered for sale in 2004. Until October 2005, hospital operations were maintained in individual buildings. In 2007 an investor submitted a draft for the furnishing of residential units in the buildings, which was accepted. The construction work began, but was often interrupted, so that the condition of the two buildings was last classified in 2012 as poor with moderate risk.
