hdparm is a computer program for reading and setting parameters for ATA - drives under Linux and Windows . hdparm is under the BSD license and is therefore free software .
With hdparm, among other things, the settings for DMA and Tagged Command Queuing and the ATAPI transfer mode can be changed. In many cases it can significantly increase the speed of EIDE hard drives, CD-ROM and DVD drives , but hdparm commands can also lead to data loss and even damage to hard drives and controllers . For example, you should avoid confusing the -w with -W options. hdparm is called from the command line . For example, the user can use
hdparm -d1 /dev/hda
Turn on DMA for the first IDE device.
A function that is often used is switching off the power management for notebook hard drives with the "notebook hard drive bug".
hdparm -B255 /dev/sd[a]
Furthermore, benchmarks can be carried out and the properties and current settings of the ATA drive can be read out itself. Some of these settings can be changed with hdparm, for example Automatic acoustic management (AAM). These functions are also available in a Windows version of hdparm.
The program must run with root / administrator rights, otherwise it cannot access the device / device file.
