The Albizzi or Albizi were an old Italian noble family that was first documented in 1199.

history

In the 13th and 14th centuries, the family held high offices as the leader of the Guelfs in the Republic of Florence . Piero degli Albizzi played a prominent role in the time of the Guelph rule of terror up to the uprising of the Wollkämmer ( Ciompi uprising ) in 1378, during which he was executed.

In 1382 the family regained power in the city through the expulsion of the dictator Salvestro de 'Medici at the head of an oligarchic coalition.

In 1393 Maso degli Albizzi was elected Gonfaloniere and, due to his influential position in the Arte della Lana, remained almost lord of Florence for many years until his death in 1417.

In the further struggle for power in Florence, however, the Albizzi had to give way to the Medici : in 1433, in the election for the new Signoria, predominantly supporters of the Albizzi (under the leadership of Rinaldo degli Albizzi ) were drawn, so that the applicant Cosimo de 'Medici was first imprisoned and then exiled to Urbino after an attempted murder on him failed. However, he opposed the judgment and went into exile in Venice , from where he continued to manage the family's own bank.

Due to an unjust tax policy by the Albizzi and papal interventions, Cosimo de 'Medici was able to return to Florence as early as 1434. The supporters of the Albizzi, for their part, were now banished - this time without any assassinations or death sentences.

The Albizzi submitted to the Medici and left them to rule. In 1508 Giovanni degli Albizzi married Ginevra de 'Medici and later became the uncle of that Lorenzino de' Medici , who murdered the city lord Alessandro de 'Medici in 1537 .
