Francesco Albizzi
Francesco Albizzi (* 1593 in Cesena , † October 3, 1684 in Rome ) was an Italian lawyer, diplomat and Catholic clergyman.
Life and effect
Albizzi is best known for his position on witch hunts. In contrast to numerous, above all German witch hunters, he took a moderate position: he considered damaging magic, the flight of witches and the witch's Sabbath to be possible, but extremely rare, but placed high demands on the actual evidence. He viewed the mass executions in the Holy Roman Empire of the 1630s with horror.
He first studied law and after the death of his wife theology . In 1635 he became assessor at the Holy Office in Rome. In 1636/37 he accompanied the legate Marzio Ginetti to Cologne .
In 1654 he was promoted to cardinal priest of the titular church Santa Maria in Via , in 1671 he moved to Santi Quattro Coronati , 1680 to Santa Maria in Trastevere , from 1681 until his death he was cardinal priest of Santa Prassede . From 1667 to 1669 he was chamberlain to the College of Cardinals .
He served Popes Innocent X (1644–1655) and Alexander VII (1655–1667).
