The Hector Pieterson Museum , officially the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum , is a large museum in Orlando , Soweto , South Africa . It is two blocks away from the location where Hector Pieterson was shot, and in memory of him and the 565 other victims in 1976, the museum was named after him. The museum presents the events that led to the Soweto uprising , as well as the uprising itself.

When it opened on June 16, 2002, it was the first museum in the previously neglected, ghetto-like suburb of Johannesburg . The total cost of the project was approximately 23.2 million rand , 16 million of which was raised by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism and 7.2 million by the City of Johannesburg.

The Hector Pieterson memorial stands in a small park in front of the entrance .
