The Heilig Kreuzer Tor was a city gate of the former Augsburg city fortifications . It was not located on the outer city wall, but inside Augsburg's old town between the Upper City in the south and the Lower City in the north, west of the episcopal city , near the Holy Cross Monastery and the Catholic and Protestant Holy Cross Church , at the intersection of today's streets Heilig-Kreuz-Strasse, Kasernstrasse, Theaterstrasse, Beim Hafnerberg and Ludwigstrasse.

history

A first written mention can be found in accounts from the year 1321. The Kilianplan from 1626 shows the gate as part of the walling of the Upper City built in the 12th century. The western gate of the episcopal city must have stood not far away.

The gate became famous because of the temporary imprisonment of Götz von Berlichingen . The imprisonment lasted from November 30, 1528 to March 1, 1530. On April 1, 1529 he managed to escape from the Heilig Kreuzer Tor.

Due to the heavy wagon traffic and the narrow passage width, the gate was the first of the Augsburg gates to be demolished in 1807.
