Inn and Chapel

Heiligenbrunnen is a small settlement in the Black Forest.

The settlement is near Breitnau on the outskirts of Titisee-Neustadt in the Freiburg administrative district and consists of a few houses, a small chapel and a larger inn. The oldest building is the chapel, which was built in 1710 and is privately owned by the innkeeper family. The chapel is mentioned in a document ( Capella S. Margarethae Virginis et Martyris in Fonte Sancto ). The altar dates from 1658, its artistic design can be classified under the term "Black Forest rural art". The central figure in the altarpiece is Saint Notburga , a Scottish queen who was chased away with her children after the death of her husband and who fled to the Black Forest. According to legend, she is said to have knocked the source of the Heiligenbrunnen out of the rock with a stick. The fountain is still in the homestead today. Notburga is venerated in the region as the patron saint of pregnant women and giving birth.

On the altar, among others, is a figure of Saint Wendelin , who is considered the patron saint of shepherds, agriculture and cattle.
