The Helm AG (proper spelling: HELM AG ) is a German company based in Hamburg . The conglomerate is active in the chemical, crop protection, pharmaceutical and fertilizer sectors, mainly as a trader. Helm has over 100 branches and subsidiaries in around 30 countries in Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa. In the ranking of the 30 largest family of Spiegel Online , the company took over in 2017 to 29th place.

history

The businessman Karl Otto Helm founded the Karl O. Helm company in 1900 as an import and export company. In 1950 Hermann Schnabel took over the company name for 3000 DM and quickly expanded it, specializing in the chemical trade. The first branches were soon opened in Europe and America, and the number of employees rose to 300 in 1970.

In 1978 the name was changed to Helm AG . By the 1980s, the number of employees doubled and sales rose to 557 million euros. In 1984 Dieter Schnabel became chairman of the board, he continued the change from a trading house to an internationally operating marketing organization. In the 2017 financial year, the company had 1,521 employees worldwide. 2009 Helm AG was a joint venture with the Hungarian pharmaceutical company Gedeon Richter in order Strathmann Biotec GmbH to acquire, is involved in the Gedeon Richter with 70 percent and helmet with 30 percent. Hermann Schnabel died in 2010. From 2012 to the end of March 2020, Hans-Christian Sievers was CEO of the company. In April 2020, Stephan Schnabel took over the management of the family company in the third generation.
