Henriques Street , also known by its former name, Berner Street , is a short street in London's East End .

Henriques Street is in the Tower Hamlets borough of Whitechapel . To the north, Henriques Street joins Commercial Road , and to the south it merges into Boyd Street . It intersects with Fairclough Street about halfway up .

Surname

Henriques Street was named after the well-known Jewish philanthropist and social activist Basil Henriques . In the "Bernhard Baron House", which is still there, he founded a social club for young men. The street was renamed in his honor.

On September 30, 1888, around 1:00 a.m. on Berner Street, the body of prostitute Elizabeth Stride was found on the floor of a small, dark courtyard called Dutfield's Yard . Dutfield's Yard was accessible from Berner Street through a gate between a workers' club and an apartment building with shops. Elizabeth Stride is believed to be the third victim of the Jack the Ripper series of murders. Only 44 minutes later, the body of the fourth Ripper victim Catherine Eddowes was discovered in Miter Square in the City of London, about a kilometer away .
