Henry Mathews Prize

The Henry Mathews Prize was launched by the governing body of Critical Shareholders in 2007 to commemorate the managing director Henry Mathews . It is awarded to people and initiatives who have made an outstanding contribution to the goals of the umbrella organization. There is no monetary payment associated with the award; it is to be understood as an express appreciation of the work of the award winners and is also noticed by the press. The prize is awarded every autumn at the general assembly of the umbrella association.

  • 2007 Heffa Schücking for the urgewald association
    The urgewald association has been involved in campaigns and projects for environmental protection and human rights since 1992. You pay particular attention to the banks and financiers of large projects such as nuclear power plants, dams or pipelines.
  • 2008 Gregor Böckermann for the Association of Religious for Peace

  • 2011 Alex Köhler-Schnura for the coordination against Bayer dangers
    The Coordination against Bayer Risks was founded in 1983 as part of an international network committed to environmental protection and human rights. Their campaigns deal with the global effects of chemical production and show possible alternatives.
  • 2012 Christian Russau for the cooperation in Brazil
    The organization Cooperation Brazil was founded in 1989. Its members come from trade unions, churches, universities, the environmental movement, human rights work and development policy. Since economic decisions in Germany also have an impact on employees in Brazil, it is important to them to make their situation public and thus to work towards a more social and just world.   • 2013 Paul Corbit Brown for the Keeper of the Mountains Foundation
    The Keeper of the Mountains Foundation works to preserve nature in West Virginia. There mountain tops are being blown up on a massive scale to make room for coal mining; 500 hilltops have been destroyed in West Virginia alone. Paul Corbit Brown attends general corporate meetings at home and abroad as a guest to warn of the dangers of coal mining. His main focus is on financing mining companies, which are largely supported by the banks.
  • 2014 Maik Pflaum and the Christian Initiative Romero
    Maik Pflaum and the Christian Initiative Romero received the 2014 award for their long-term social commitment in Central America. Over many years, the CIR has established contacts with women's organizations in El Salvador , Nicaragua and Honduras , where it is a partner in enforcing labor rights in the clothing and sporting goods industry. For many years now, the award winners have been doing important critical work at the shareholders' meetings of Adidas , Puma and Metro . In 2014, Pflaum and the CIR cooperated intensively with the umbrella association of critical shareholders as part of the project "fairplay - corporations responsible for people and the environment".
