Hercules Inc. was an American chemical and ammunition manufacturer. It was founded in 1882 as the Hercules Powder Company by DuPont and the Laflin & Rand Powder Company . Hercules Inc. , which became one of the largest American manufacturers of smokeless powder , was later created through unbundling (as an antitrust measure) . During the split, DuPont received the patents for nitrocellulose gunpowder and Hercules the patents for the combined nitrocellulose- nitroglycerin powder. During the 1960s, the company manufactured the solid fuel rocket engines for the MGR-1 Honest John short-range nuclear missile .
In 2008 the company went to the Ashland Inc. on.
