The former home Herder of the theologian and philosopher Johann Gottfried Herder is located in the center of the old town of Weimar at Herderplatz 8, to the left behind the city church St. Peter and Paul , called " Herder Church " for short, in which he was the pastor and general superintendent of the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar worked.

Due to the somewhat hidden location in the shadow of the city church, on an inconspicuous corner piece of the square, the house of the writer , which was redesigned in the Baroque style in 1726/27, hardly receives any attention. Nevertheless, it belongs as one of three Weimar Herder sites since 1998 for UNESCO - World Heritage " Classical Weimar ".

Herder lived in this house with his family for 27 years from 1776, in which he was called to Weimar by Goethe's intercession by Duke Karl August , until his death on December 18, 1803. His family in Weimar quickly grew, six his eight children were born in this house. The writer and theater director Franz von Dingelstedt (1814–1881) had the opportunity in 1850 to see Herder's study, which was still in existence at the time, and revealed in his notes:

"At the window ... there is a desk, rotten, wobbly and down ... a couple of pens, ... and a much used coffee board. Everything is infinitely simple, almost poor to a modern eye. "

The garden behind the rectory with its fountain, flowers, fruit trees, berry bushes and vegetable patches was particularly close to Herder's heart. At that time, he was able to design the routing and planting according to his own ideas. On the basis of his letters and poems and with the help of an old city map, the Herdergarten was reconstructed together with the garden shed, which was converted in 1846, in 1994 on the occasion of the 250th birthday of Johann Gottfried Herder.

In contrast to the house, which still serves as the seat of the superintendent, the garden can be entered. Herder's former official residence is identified by a plaque above the entrance gate. A small church shop has been located on the ground floor of the historic residential building since April 2005, which also includes a café in the Herderhof. On the west gable of the building is Herder's saying in large letters: " Christianity is freedom and joy ".
