Herta Maurer-Lausegger (born November 30, 1953 in Klagenfurt ) is a Carinthian-Slovenian linguist , ethnologist , cultural scientist and film producer.

Live and act

After graduating from the Bundesgymnasium and Bundesrealgymnasium for Slovenes in Klagenfurt in 1972, she studied Slavic Studies and Folklore at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz , where she received her doctorate in 1980. Her dissertation deals with the terminology of the farmer's mill in Carinthian Slovenian dialects.

From 1981 to 1983 she was a research assistant on the project '' Inventory of the Slovene vernacular in Carinthia '' at the Institute for Slavic Studies at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz. From 1983 to 1984 she headed the newly established ethnological department within the framework of the Slovenian Christian Cultural Association ('' Krščanska kulturna zveza '') in Klagenfurt.

She has worked at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt since 1984, first as a university assistant until 1995 and since then as an assistant professor, from March 1, 2014 to December 31, 2015, she was head of the Institute for Slavic Studies.

Since 1984 she has worked and since 1994 has been the head of the scientific project researching the Slovenian dialects in Carinthia at the Institute for Slavic Studies.

Maurer-Lausegger also paid special attention to research into the Carinthian Slovene peasant book tradition and folk poetism, the so-called bukovništvo and the Carinthian Slovene folk poet Andreas Schuster Drabosnjak (1768–1825). With a linguistic computer method and her own knowledge of the specific characteristics of the dialect, she was able to confirm several of the author's handwritten autographs. An official graphological expertise is also available.

Audiovisual Dialectology

Since 1994, Maurer-Lausegger has been the director of the dialectological-ethnological film and research project Documentation of Old Folk Culture in Dialect .

In cooperation with professional film teams, she documents Slovenian dialects in bilingual areas of Southern Carinthia. From 1994 onwards she gradually developed the methods of audiovisual dialectology. In 2000 the project was renamed Audiovisual Dialectology accordingly.

The aim of the documentation is a synchronous and authentic recording of the spontaneously spoken dialect and the ethnographic facts in the context of the situation. Topics from the previous artisanal and rural milieu are dealt with, such as mills and sawmills, bread-baking, and rural tools. The result of this research are documentaries and booklets:.

The documentaries and the text enclosures, each containing the dialect text and translations (Slovenian, German, partly English), have been published by Hermagoras Verlag - Mohorjeva založba in Klagenfurt. A complete digital edition is in preparation.

The interdisciplinary partnership "Kulturwissenschaft & Wirtschaft" has existed since 2000 and operates an internet presence and public relations work (design of ethnographic exhibitions, various cultural and supporting programs at home and abroad; partnership-based cooperation with business).
