High power amplifier

As a High Power Amplifier ( HPA ) in is satellite communication of the transmission amplifier called. Before the transmission signal is fed to the HPA, it must first be converted into the frequency range intended for transmission (e.g. C-band 5.85–6.65 GHz, X-band 7.9–8.4 GHz or Ku- Band 13.75-14.5 GHz). This is done by means of a boost converter , which can also be integrated into the HPA housing.

To achieve the required transmission power ( EIRP ), the signal is first amplified by an HPA and then bundled and radiated in the direction of the satellite by the transmitting parabolic antenna.

Two types of HPA are currently in use at earth stations :

  • TWTA - traveling wave tube amplifier

Reliable, tried and tested over many years. Preheating times of usually several minutes must be observed during operation . Flange powers of several kW are usually achieved.

Usually used in the lower power range (up to a few hundred watts).
