High roller (gambler)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

High Rollers - often also called "High Limit Gambler" - is a term for players who mainly work in casinos and who play for particularly high sums.

The term high rollers is also sometimes used for people who bet large amounts of money on sports betting . They are also called whales or "big donors". The name High Roller is ambiguous:

  • On the one hand, the name of a roller coaster ( Hochschaubahn ) is associated with the ups and downs of a gambler's life.
  • On the other hand, it can also be interpreted as a high roller, i.e. high stakes on a rolling ball (in roulette ) or rolling dice .

Special positions for high rollers

With a certain stake or turnover, the casinos refer to a guest as a high roller or whale, to whom the casino grants VIP status . This assessment varies somewhat from casino to casino. These high-limit players are appropriately courtesy of their own VIP lounges and high-roller suites in the hotels, as well as specially assigned, special guest care. The task of these hostesses is to ensure that the financially strong player not only feels comfortable, but that a long period of loss does not hurt him too much. To keep these whales happy, they often receive lavish gifts - so-called comps (from the English "complimentary" - i.e. free).

Comps

The comps, which increase in value with the player's turnover, are given to virtually all players. This ranges from a free burger to a luxury limousine. Not all comps are referred to as such by the casinos. These are often given names such as loyalty bonus, VIP points, etc. In addition to the "normal" comps, the real high rollers receive attractive gifts such as free nights or free flights on the casino's own Learjet . The majority of players receive a free drink at the hotel bar for their loyalty points or a 5 euro credit with their next deposit.

Sports betting

As an equivalent to the high rollers in the casinos, these are those customers who bet so high amounts that they are only accepted by the manager of the betting office. Here, too, the sums fluctuate considerably. For most online bookmakers, authentication by an employee is necessary for a few hundred euros. If you want to bet a five- or six-digit amount on a sports event, you have to get this bet personally approved by the boss or a manager , even with large bookmaking companies . The reason for the approval of the high stakes by the casino management can be explained by the fact that there is a risk that a high roller breaks the bank on a winning streak.
